I personally keep this at a size font 1 so it doesn’t clutter my conversation list. Text font and Text color-Text is the first part of the most recent message, and it appears under a contact’s name.Contact Font Color-This works exactly like the other color options, just for the contacts’ font.I prefer the font at 50, however I have an app, Big Font, that enlarges my system text by a factor of 250%, so I put the size to 21. Make the font bold to make it easier to see. Contact Font-Here you control font style and size.If you choose Custom color, follow the same directions as for the Unread Indicator color. Background-You have three options for your background, either what goes with your chosen Skin, an image, or a custom color.Notice that this dot is on the top sample name and changes as you move the sliders. All three to the left is black, and all three to the right is white. You adjust the color by sliding a small tab across three color bars. Adjust the color to pop from the background you have or plan to choose. Unread Indicator Color– A dot appears on the top left corner of a contact’s name in the Conversation List to indicate you have an unread message from them.For this, I recommend temporarily disabling apps that enlarge your system’s text, as the menu doesn’t scroll and you can’t see, much less change, settings at the bottom. This image will change as you change settings in the popup menu.

If you tap on this, you will see a menu pop up from the bottom and a sample of what your current Conversation List settings looks like. The Conversation List is the first screen you see when opening the app, it has all the names of your contacts in the order of most recent exchanges. The fourth option in Custom Style is Conversation List. You can choose a Skin or pick your own colors as you go along. Default is what it is currently on, and Black will make everything negative. If you swipe right, you will see Default and Black options. If you tap on this, it will show several options. A Skin is an already prepared color scheme for the whole app. Under Custom Style, the first option is Skin. This section will have most of what makes the app accessible. Once you have the app, touch the “i” settings icon on the top right of the screen to get started.

The only downside is that the settings menu is small, so you’ll need to find someone to help you, use a magnifier, or go back and forth with screenshots you can expand. Handcent is not specifically designed for the visually impaired, but it has a large range of options for contrast and font size. It is a fully customizable app that can replace the general messaging app on your phone. Handcent SMS is a fantastic free texting app on the Google Play Store.
